Charles had moved over to America from Germany to seek his fortune as a machinist. He had previously worked in his native Germany, and France, before immigrating over to the US.
Once in California, Charles met fellow Germans Theodor Holtz and Gustav Friedrich Wilhelm Schultze who also happened to be working in the same field. They had the same passions and goals as Charles – wanting to develop slot machines.
Slot machines had already been invented, back in the 1890s. But Charles and his fellow German friends wanted to make a slot machine that was able to distribute the winnings to the player automatically.
Before this was possible, the player had to get their winnings from the barman or whoever was running the establishment that the game was played in. This became tedious for everyone – especially if the place was busy with people.
Charles and his team soon achieved their goal and in 1898, the Liberty Bell was created. This was the first slot machine that came with its own money distribution slot so that the winner could claim their money automatically.
