Delhi the Most Populated Capital City Globally
Over the last few years, we all have been talking about climate change issues quite prominently. Also, climate change is evident all over the world; with frequent landslides, floods, earthquakes, etc. The question is what is next? How can we stop these changes? Meanwhile, Swiss organization, IQAir prepared the ‘World Air Quality Report 2020 which was released globally. Delhi was ranked in the most populated city list capital all around the globe. The report highlights that Delhi’s air quality has been upgraded approximately by 15 per cent from 2019 to 2020. Along with that, the other important information that might make you feel sad is that out of 30 world’s most polluted city list 22 are from India.

You can see from the above list taken from the ‘World Air Quality Report 2020 “ which says that other than Delhi, there are 21 other Indian cities in the list of 30 most polluted cities in the world are Ghaziabad, Bulandshahar, Bisrakh Jalalpur, Noida, Greater Noida, Kanpur, Lucknow, Meerut, Agra and Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh, Bhiwari in Rajasthan, Faridabad, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, Bandhwari, Gurugram, Yamuna Nagar, Rohtak and Dharuhera in Haryana, and Muzaffarpur in Bihar.
Process of Ranking the Cities, PM2.5
The report, prepared by Swiss organisation IQAir says that the ranking of the cities all around the globe is depending on PM2.5 (µg/ m³) data from 106 countries, which is gauged by ground-based monitoring stations which are under the control of government agencies. Fine (smaller) particles which are less than PM2.5, are very unhealthy and dangerous because they can get into the deep parts of your lungs or into your blood. Owing to their minute size, particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres are able to bypass the nose and throat and penetrate deep into the lungs and some may even enter the circulatory system.

What Causes so Much Pollution in India?
The report also highlights that some of the main sources of India’s air pollution are transportation, biomass burning for cooking, electricity generation, industry, construction, waste burning and episodic agricultural burning. In India, the transportation sector is the major contributor leading to the emission of PM2.5 sources across the nation.
Good Air to Breathe for Indian Cities
But in all this, there is one good news for all the in-between pandemic and pollution report that many cities including Delhi is having better air quality because of the lockdown and less movement of public and personal vehicles said by Avinash Chanchal, Climate Campaigner at Greenpeace India.
