In a major move to power India’s growing digital hunger, well-known power infrastructure company Techno Electric & Engineering Company Ltd (TEECL) has announced it’s stepping into the digital world. The company is launching a new arm, Techno Digital Infra Pvt Ltd, and is ready to invest a massive USD 1 billion to build TEECL Data Centres across the country.
TEECL’s Billion-Dollar Leap into Digital Infrastructure
The big plan is to create a combined capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) through these new TEECL Data Centres. Think of data centres as the powerful brains that store and manage all the information for our online activities, from streaming movies to online banking. TEECL isn’t just building one kind of data centre. They’re planning a mix of giant “hyperscale” facilities, which are like super-sized data warehouses for major internet companies and cloud services, and smaller “edge” data centres. They are building these edge centers closer to where people use data, helping to speed things up for services in towns and smaller cities.
The first big project is already underway: a 36 MW hyperscale data centre in Chennai’s SIPCOT IT Park in Siruseri. This facility will serve as a data hub, supporting the digital needs of many businesses. After Chennai, TEECL has its sights set on building more large TEECL Data Centres in Kolkata and Noida.
Powering Nationwide Digital Growth and Connectivity
So, why this big move? TEECL, a company with a long history in building India’s power lines and energy projects, sees this as a natural next step. As India goes more digital, the need for a strong, reliable data infrastructure is booming. These new TEECL Data Centres will help support everything from artificial intelligence (AI) and online entertainment (OTT platforms) to financial technology and e-governance.
A particularly exciting part of the plan is a partnership with RailTel, a government company under the Ministry of Railways. Together, they aim to set up 102 edge TEECL Data Centres in 23 states. This is a big deal because it will bring high-speed data processing to many Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, helping businesses and people in those areas get faster access to digital services. This could be a game-changer for healthcare, education, and local industries in these regions.
TEECL Drives Digital India with Data Centre Expansion
Company leaders are enthusiastic about the venture. Padam Prakash Gupta, Managing Director of TEECL, mentioned that with India’s digital economy growing so fast, TEECL, with its expertise in power and construction, is well-placed to help build this digital future. Amit Agrawal, President of Techno Digital, added that their strategy of combining large and local facilities within the TEECL Data Centres network will alter India’s data handling and delivery.
This massive investment is a clear sign that TEECL is serious about becoming a major player in India’s digital transformation, aligning with the government’s ‘Digital India’ vision. By leveraging its decades of experience in building critical infrastructure, TEECL is now set to lay the foundations for a more connected and digitally empowered India, further bolstered by the expansion of TEECL Data Centres.
