During his postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco, Raymond R. Tjandrawinata experienced a pivotal moment. Surrounded by cutting-edge research and brilliant minds, he realized science wasn’t merely about discovery—it was about impact. This understanding shaped his career, propelling him from California’s labs to becoming a leading figure in Indonesian biopharmaceutical innovation. Today, as Director of Business Development and Scientific Affairs at Dexa Medica, Raymond bridges science, technology, and law to improve lives worldwide.
A Foundation Built on Science
Raymond’s academic journey began with a solid biochemistry foundation. After earning his MS and PhD at the University of California, Riverside, he pursued his passion further, completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Molecular Pharmacology at the UCSF School of Medicine. These transformative years instilled in him a deep appreciation for precision and meticulous scientific inquiry.
He launched his career at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals in South San Francisco, gaining firsthand experience in the pharmaceutical industry. “That role,” he recalls, “gave me the tools to understand how science meets real-world healthcare needs.” Nevertheless, his heart remained in Indonesia. Returning home with his wife, Juni Suhardiman, he joined the Dexa Group, where he has now dedicated over 25 years to advancing biopharmaceutical solutions tailored to diverse populations.
A Visionary Leader at Dexa Medica
Dexa Medica is a leading pharmaceutical company in Indonesia, recognized for its pioneering efforts in biopharmaceuticals and natural product-based therapies. As a global player, Dexa applies its expertise in discovery, formulation, manufacturing, and marketing to supply high-quality pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, supplements, and herbal medicines across Asia, Africa, and Europe.
At Dexa Medica, Raymond’s role is both multifaceted and crucial. As Director of Business Development and Scientific Affairs, he leads initiatives that align the company’s mission with emerging market demands. His responsibilities include overseeing the Dexa Development Center, Dexa Laboratories of Biomolecular Sciences (DLBS), and the Regulatory Affairs, Medical Information, and Intellectual Property Rights divisions.
“My job,” he explains, “is about connecting the dots. From identifying opportunities in biotechnology to ensuring our products meet the highest regulatory standards, it’s a balance between strategy, innovation, and compliance.”
Under Raymond’s leadership, Dexa Medica has achieved notable progress in the development of biopharmaceuticals and therapies derived from natural products. One of the standout initiatives is Obat Modern Asli Indonesia (OMAI), which aims to utilize Indonesia’s rich biodiversity to create scientifically validated modern medicines. “It’s about honoring tradition while advancing science,” he states.
Turning Innovation into Reality
Bringing a pharmaceutical product from concept to market is a Herculean task, and Raymond has mastered navigating its complex pathways. “Regulatory frameworks can be challenging,” he explains, “but the key is to align scientific innovation with compliance from the outset.”
His expertise in regulatory science and intellectual property law is vital to safeguarding Dexa Medica’s innovations. “Securing patents isn’t just about protecting ideas—it’s about ensuring our products reach the people who need them,” he adds. Raymond’s expertise in law and science has led to multiple patented biopharmaceutical products, strengthening Dexa Medica’s status as an industry leader.
Educating the Next Generation
In addition to his role at Dexa Medica, Raymond is a Professor of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Teaching has always been his passion, as it allows him to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators.
“I teach molecular pharmacology, natural product innovation, and intellectual property law,” he explains. However, Raymond’s teaching approach goes beyond traditional lectures. He emphasizes interdisciplinary problem-solving and critical thinking, preparing his students to navigate the intersections of science, law, and business.
“I want my students to understand that science doesn’t exist in a vacuum; it has ethical, legal, and societal implications,” he notes. By mentoring students on research projects, Raymond ensures they are equipped to tackle real-world challenges with both technical skills and a strong sense of responsibility.
Achievements Born from Dedication
Throughout his career, Raymond has achieved significant milestones that highlight his impact on the pharmaceutical industry. Over the past 25 years, he has contributed to the development and launch of more than 500 pharmaceutical products, including both generic and research-based innovations. His contributions to biopharmaceutical research are equally remarkable. Raymond has led the development of over 20 patented innovations and has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles. His work has earned him a Google Scholar H-index of 35, demonstrating the global influence of his research.
Among his many accolades, Raymond is particularly proud of receiving the Habibie Award for Medicine and Biotechnology in 2016 and the WIPO Medal for Inventors in 2018. “These awards remind me that the work we do has a real impact. They’re not just personal achievements; they are validations of the collective effort to improve healthcare,” he says.
Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
Raymond’s career has faced several challenges, with one of the most significant being the need to navigate the diverse regulatory frameworks that govern the pharmaceutical industry. “Each country has its own set of rules, and staying compliant while innovating requires constant learning and adaptation,” he explains.
Another major challenge has been fostering innovation in a competitive landscape. To address this, Raymond has promoted a collaborative culture within Dexa Medica, encouraging interdisciplinary research and teamwork. “Innovation doesn’t happen in silos. It results from people from different fields coming together to solve problems,” he says.
Preparing for the Future
Looking ahead, Raymond is focused on integrating emerging technologies into the pharmaceutical industry. He notes, “AI and big data analytics have the potential to revolutionize drug discovery and regulatory science.” By leveraging these tools, he aims to accelerate the development of sustainable and affordable therapies.
Another key area of focus is advancing natural product-based therapies. “Indonesia’s biodiversity is a treasure trove of potential solutions,” he emphasizes. Through initiatives like OMAI, Raymond intends to address global healthcare inequities by making cutting-edge treatments accessible to underserved populations.
In addition, Raymond is pursuing a Doctorate in Law with a concentration in International Intellectual Property Law at the Pelita Harapan University (UPH) in Jakarta. He explains, “Safeguarding innovation is just as important as the act of creating it.” His goal is to influence global health policies and ensure that life-saving therapies reach those who need them most.
Balancing Work and Life
Despite his demanding career, Raymond believes in the importance of maintaining a work-life balance. “It’s essential for creativity and productivity,” he states. He prioritizes mindfulness and spends quality time with his family, in addition to engaging in personal hobbies such as writing, playing the piano, and exploring literature.
“These activities provide me with a mental reset and often inspire new perspectives for my work,” he explains. For Raymond, balance is not just about managing time; it’s about staying connected to the things that bring joy and meaning to life.
A Message of Inspiration
Reflecting on his journey, Raymond shares a guiding principle that has shaped his career: “Innovation is not only about creating something new but ensuring it reaches and benefits those who need it most.”
He believes that true leadership lies in empowering others and driving meaningful change. “Whether it’s mentoring a student or leading a team at Dexa Medica, my goal is always to inspire and support people in making a difference,” he says.
Raymond’s story is a classic example of how interdisciplinary knowledge and collaboration can empower one’s journey. By blending science, law, and compassion, he has not only advanced healthcare but also set an example of what it means to lead with purpose. For Raymond, the journey is far from over. With each new challenge, he remains driven by the belief that innovation, when guided by humanity, can transform lives and build a healthier world.
