In a recent interview with Business APAC, Tanya discussed the trends in the APAC pharmaceutical and biotech industry, the benefits and challenges of compounding, and the future of personalized medicine.

Business APAC: The APAC region is witnessing a surge in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, driven by various factors. What are the main drivers of this growth, and what are the major hurdles and prospects that you encounter?

Tanya: The pharmaceutical and biotech industry in the APAC region is growing rapidly because of several factors. One is the increasing demand for new medical solutions resulting from rising population, income levels, and aging demographics.

Another is the enhanced investment in research and development, which has enabled breakthroughs in drug discovery, biotechnology, and precision medicine. Regulatory reforms across the region have also eased market access and encouraged innovation. Moreover, growing awareness of chronic diseases has stimulated demand for personalized therapies.

However, we face several challenges as well. One is the complexity and cost of navigating diverse regulatory landscapes. Another is the shortage of skilled professionals, which hampers R&D, clinical trials, and regulatory compliance. A third challenge is the fragmentation of markets, which necessitates tailored strategies and pricing models. A fourth challenge is the need for effective intellectual property protection, which is vital for sustained innovation. We can unleash the full potential of the industry by addressing these challenges, leading to improved healthcare outcomes for the region and beyond.

Business APAC: You have an impressive and unconventional career path, from aspiring to be a fighter pilot to becoming a successful pharmacist and biotech entrepreneur. How did you navigate this transition, and what motivated you to pursue your passion for chemistry?

Tanya: As a child, I dreamed of becoming a fighter pilot in the Australian Air Force. I trained rigorously, excelled academically, and passed the entrance exams with flying colors.

However, the final medical evaluation dashed my dreams: my feet were disqualifying. It seemed like a flimsy excuse, as I was a competitive state and national-level athlete at the time, excelling in basketball and snowboarding, among other sports.

I redirected my focus and pursued my passion for chemistry by studying pharmacy at the University of Sydney. Although I was not the most diligent student during my undergraduate degree, preferring hands-on experiences over classroom lectures, I found my true calling when I returned to Cairns and established my own pharmacy. There, my innate curiosity and thirst for knowledge flourished. Witnessing the struggles of customers with chronic health conditions firsthand inspired me to explore compounding, biotechnology, and Good Manufacturing Practices.

That is how I found fulfillment and purpose in the pharmaceutical industry. It has led to a gratifying and impactful career, positively influencing the lives of others. Every day, I’m inspired by the patients I serve.

Business APAC: You are the driving force behind the company’s success and growth. How do you balance your multiple roles and responsibilities as the leader of the organization?

Tanya: My primary roles and responsibilities as the leader of the company include setting the strategic direction and vision for the organization, guiding decision-making processes, and ensuring alignment with our mission and values.

I also oversee the overall operations, including financial management, resource allocation, and risk mitigation. I am accountable for the performance and outcomes of the company, and I constantly monitor and evaluate our progress and achievements.

However, I do not work alone. I have a talented and dedicated team of professionals who share my passion and vision. I am responsible for fostering a positive organizational culture, nurturing talent, and promoting collaboration and innovation among team members.

Additionally, I represent the company to stakeholders, such as government agencies, investors, customers, and the community, and uphold ethical standards and corporate governance principles in all our endeavors.

Business APAC: Leadership is not a smooth journey. What are some of the challenges that you encountered and overcame as a leader?

Tanya: I faced a range of challenges on my journey as a leader, from health setbacks to unforeseen obstacles, each serving as a catalyst for personal growth and valuable lessons.

I navigated through periods of uncertainty and change, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic downturns, and shifts in market dynamics. To address this, I fostered resilience within myself and the team, emphasizing adaptability and flexibility to respond effectively to changing circumstances.

Moreover, I led through periods of rapid growth, which presented challenges in scaling operations, maintaining organizational culture, and managing increased complexity. I tackled these challenges by prioritizing strategic planning and seeking external expertise from a team of expert coaches and mentors, including the Advisory Board Centre, to navigate expansion effectively.

Business APAC: Tell us about your team. How do you keep them motivated and productive?

Tanya: I am fortunate to have a team of experienced pharmacists and pharmacy assistants who share my passion for providing exceptional holistic care and service to our customers.

One of the ways I inspire and enable them to perform at their best is by communicating clearly and transparently. I share the company goals, performance expectations, and updates on regulatory requirements with them. I also keep them informed of our progress and achievements.

Another way is by recognizing and appreciating their efforts and contributions. I acknowledge individual and collective successes through verbal praise, written commendations, and rewards. I celebrate the milestones and accomplishments of our team, and I express my gratitude for their hard work and dedication.

Furthermore, I encourage professional development through ongoing support for courses, certifications, and workshops, fostering a culture of continuous learning. I empower team members with delegated responsibilities and decision-making authority, fostering a sense of ownership and contribution to the pharmacy’s success.

I also hold regular feedback sessions to allow team members to voice concerns and suggestions for improvement, and I provide constructive support to address any issues.

These strategies ensure our team stays motivated, engaged, and empowered to deliver high-quality care and service to our customers while fostering a positive and rewarding work environment.

Business APAC: Regulatory frameworks play a crucial role in the pharma and biotech sector. What are the most common ethical challenges that the industry faces?

Tanya: The pharmaceutical and biotech industry faces various ethical challenges. One is balancing affordability with research costs to ensure that life-saving drugs remain accessible to those in need. Another is ensuring transparency in clinical trial data to protect participant rights. A third is safeguarding patient privacy and data security in the digital age.

Moreover, marketing practices must prioritize patient safety and adhere strictly to regulatory guidelines. Disparities in access to essential medicines pose significant ethical concerns, highlighting the need for initiatives to promote global health equity.

Furthermore, striking a balance between innovation incentives and ensuring access to patented medicines and technologies presents its own set of challenges.

The industry must address these ethical dilemmas through collaborative efforts among industry stakeholders, regulators, healthcare professionals, and patient advocacy groups. By implementing transparent and patient-centered practices, the industry can prioritize public health and safety while striving to meet the needs of patients worldwide.

Business APAC: What are the current trends in pharma and biotech? Which trends will dominate in 2024 and beyond?
